‘Olgeta Long Long‘ roughly means ‘everything’s mad’ or ‘it’s all crazy’ in the Tok Pisin (a.k.a PNG Pidgin, Melanesian Pidgin) language. I can’t vouch for the accuracy of the translation – I haven’t had any lessons yet but I think it’s OK. I chose long long (crazy, mad) over bagarup (ruined, broken) because bagarup struck me as a bit too ominous, although I daresay long long has connotations that aren’t necessarily positive. To say something’s crazy in English may imply a wild kind of fun, but the connotation probably doesn’t extend to Tok Pisin. Apologies in advance. Nonetheless the implied ruinous finality of bagarup isn’t something I’m keen to invite upon myself, even though I like the word a hell of a lot more.
I should mention that this blog is not a guaranteed long-term project. I have no real idea of what internet connections will be like in Port Moresby and beyond, so updating my be infrequent or maybe even non-existent. Wish me luck.
